Maureen Schab Scholarship
Born September 25, 1949 in Bayside, Queens, New York, Maureen’s youth was spent attending professional sporting events in New York City with her sportswriter father Tim, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. She went to Immaculata College near Philadelphia where she met her husband Bill at St. Joseph’s College. She began teaching near Annapolis, Maryland in 1971 and married Bill in 1972 while he was attending law school. In 1974 Bill and Maureen moved to Lewes. Maureen began teaching. She loved her students and believed that there was something good in all of them. She went to extraordinary lengths to try to make them like and understand math, and most importantly, to understand its relevance to the real world. Long before it was common practice, she insisted that her students and their parents contact her on any given day, at any time for questions or help. Regardless of how poorly students were doing, she would urge, encourage (and sometimes harass) them into doing better because she truly felt that each one of them was worth the effort. She taught at Milton and Lewes Junior Highs and for many years with Academic Challenge at Del Tech in Georgetown. While teaching and also while raising her family, she tutored scores of struggling kids who sought her help. She retired from teaching in June 2007 although she continued tutoring until a few days before going to the hospital for the last time. What Maureen loved most was her family – Bill, her husband of 35 years; their son Corey and daughter Kerry, both Cape graduates; Kerry’s husband Chris; and her dog Dodger; and the world’s craziest fish Oscar. To honor Maureen’s memory and her love of teaching, Bill and the family have established the Maureen Schab Scholarship Fund for aspiring teachers who graduate from Cape Henlopen High School. The scholarship is a $1000 renewal grant based on grades and the student’s continued pursuit of an education degree. The scholarship was awarded for the first time at Cape’s 2009 Graduation Awards Ceremony in June. Interested students should check with the CHHS guidance office for more information.
